Our Indoor Air

06/06/2011

The Environmental Protection Agency describes the air in our homes and businesses as more polluted than the air outdoors. Our Indoor Air Quality is generally three times worse than outside air. In some cases, much worse!

Indoor air quality is inaccurately referred to as “dust”. Certainly dust particles are part of the air pollution we filter with our lungs. In fact, particles of dust, pollen and dander amount to about 35% of the air contaminants that cause allergies according to the Center for Disease Control.

Indoor air quality is subject to the products of our industrialized society. These include the “V.O.C.’s” or volatile organic compounds exuded or “off-gasing” from the materials with which we surround ourselves. These include those created by commonly used household cleaning products, carpets, and furniture. We also bring them in via dry cleaning for instance, where known carcinogens and behavior-altering compounds in vapor form invade our households and workplaces. V.O.C.’s amount to about 31% of the allergy causing air contaminants.

Indoor air quality is subject to biological influences. Living organisms such as bacteria, fungi, mold spores and viruses are in the air. Air-borne viral and bacterial infections are commonplace and can spread easily given the right circumstances. These “bioaerosols” amount to about 34% of allergy causing air contaminants that causes allergies.

What’s the solution? Air purification and air cleaning (effective filtration).

Alley Heating & Air Conditioning specializes in air purification and air cleaning.. Fresh air is one of our specialties.

Air “cleaning” is our emphasis when filtration is discussed. The standard filter does little to remove particles from the air, especially when we examine what passes through and is inhaled into our lungs.

Filtering or cleaning the air does not remove the V.O.C.’s or bioaerosols from the air. Only air purification does that.

This could be the single most important step you can take for your respiratory health!
